2nd RSAB Military Organization

The 2nd RSAB military consists of 4 distinct, self-contained entities:

Front-Line Units

The Front-Line units consist only of those units which constituted the 2nd RSAB forces upon their departure from the Inner Sphere. The Front-Line units are staffed by only the most elite and capable personnel. Tradition dictates that while individual unit composition of the Front-Line units may change, the number and names of those units may not. When talking about the 2nd Special Assault Brigade (2nd RSAB), the inference is that it only applies to the Front-Line units.

All personnel serving in Front-Line units are permanently assigned. They do not have additional assigned roles within the 2nd RSAB society.

Reserves

The 2nd RSAB Reserves were created to provide support to the Front-Line units and also to support the Home Guard & Militia units. The Reserves consist of permanently-assigned personnel who, while very capable, were not of a high enough calibre upon graduation to be placed with the Front-Line units. Many Reserves personnel are able to make the jump to a Front-Line unit within 10 years when they have proven themselves. The Reserves and Front-Line units both use the same regimental organization and tactics. The Reserves do use different Brigade and Division, and Naval organization, however.

Home Guard

Home Guard units consist mainly of part-time personnel. These personnel wish to serve in an active capacity but either did not have the capability to make the Reserves or Front-Line units upon graduation, or have a non-military primary career.

The Home Guard is arranged into 4 Tactical Corps or (TaC's), designated Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. TaC's are combined-arms units with an emphasis on Battlemechs, armour, and artillery. They are defence- and counter-attack focused in their training and tactics and they have limited aerospace assets. Should a Home Guard unit require infantry support, they turn to Militia units. The Home Guard does possesses a small number of Jumpships but no warships. They also have enough transport Dropships to lift all active forces but only have a limited number of assault Dropships. Warship, and assault Dropship support is provided by the Reserves, who also provide any additionally required aerospace fighter support. Jumpship support is provided by either the Reserves or Quartermaster Command.

The only permanently-active Home Guard personnel are battalion and above commanders along with a limited number of support staff. All other positions are filled as citizens rotate through on their duty periods.

In the case of an invasion of the home worlds, the Home Guard takes charge of any training units that are available.

2nd RSAB Militia

As with the Home Guard, Militia units consist primarily of part-time personnel. These personnel wish to serve in an active capacity but either did not have the capability to make the Reserves or Front-Line units upon graduation, or have a non-military primary career.

The 2nd RSAB Militia places an emphasis on infantry and artillery. They rely completely on other branches for their aerospace support. Armour and Battlemechs serve in supporting roles.

The Home Guard and Militia are separate entities both tasked with defense of the 2nd RSAB home worlds and installations. They both serve different purposes and roles but train extensively together to work with and support each other in operations.

The only permanently-assigned Militia personnel are regiment and above commanders along with a limited number of support staff. Regimental commanders only spend roughly one third of their time commanding their own unit while spending the rest at the brigade command level. Brigade commanders only spend one third of their time commanding their own brigades while spending the rest of their time at the division command level. Similarly, division commanders spend only one third of their time commanding their own unit while spending the rest of their time acting as either adjutants to the HGM commander or supporting other division commanders. This arrangement allows the HGM to rapidly and effectively triple its size without sacrificing command experience.

Militia units do not share a common unit structure with either the Reserves or the Front-Line units. The Reserve units, however, are trained to work with the differing structures of the Militia.

It should be noted that 80% of the adult population is instructed and certified in infantry combat at least once per year, thus nearly the entire population can be activated into the Militia if necessary. There are significant operational limitations to the amount of time that the entire population can remain mobilized, but in the case of a large-scale invasion, the Militia has been designed to function with that large number of personnel. It should be noted that 1-in-3 Militia members have been trained in anti-mech combat, 1-in-10 Militia members have been trained in insurgency techniques, and 1-in-20 have been trailed in counter- and counter-counter-insurgency tactics.

Experimental Combat Brigade

The Experimental Combat Brigade (ECB) is a stand-alone unit which is dedicated to developing and testing new battle tactics, strategies, techniques, and technology. They have their own quartermaster, support, and naval assets under their direct command.
